As terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 closed American air space, 38 passenger planes heading west over the Atlantic with more than 6500 passengers and crew were diverted to Gander Airport in Newfoundland. Those passengers soon found out that instead of being trapped, they were embraced. CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg revisits the airport ten years later.

Just FYI…..the footage of small villages near the sea is not Gander…..it would be communities on the coastline near Gander. Gander is inland, not on the coasts of Newfoundland. Lots of history in NL….also lots of connections in history between? the US military and Newfoundlanders…..and Gander has alot of history in WW2 as where the allies had their last stop before crossing the Atlantic.

Mayor Claude? Elliot is my mothers cousin. Got to love the Newfoundland accent…lol. God Bless Newfoundland, God Bless the USA. Wish more Americans would pay attenion to this story of Gander and 9/11….people were incredibly generous and even a guy from Texas and a woman from the UK ended up falling in love and marrying.

Im from Gander Newfoundland. I was there when all 34 flights touched down in Gander. I remeber it being insanely busy. I remember schools shutting down and all the hotels? shutting down. I remember sitting next to the fence by the strip watching the flights come in. I think is something well never forget.

I lived through exactly this situation in? Stephenville, Newfoundland. So much kindness and passion from some great islanders. I will never forget this experience

We had to make an emergency landing in Gander in 2006, within 60 minutes, the restaurant and store were opened and we were taken care off for the 7 hours? we had to wait while the airplane was repaired. We were on the way from Germany to Baltimore. Thank you Gander!

As a canadian living in Montreal, I am so proud? to be canadian and this is just 1 example of why the entire planet loves is, when I say that I am canadian when I travel, people all of a sudden become so friendly and nice
